Non-public schools losing
students at an accelerated rate

Enrollment in non-public elementary and high schools has continued its year-to-year decline for the sixth year in a row. According to data made public by Delaware Department of Education, 23,804 children were enrolled in non-public schools, including home schools, on Sept. 30, 2010. That was 4.9% fewer than a year earlier. The department has not explained why it takes more than half the academic year to make the data available. The pace of decline has accelerated every year since 2005. It is generally believed that the downturn in the economy is the most prominent reason.  Statewide, 14% of school-age children do not attend public schools. In New Castle County, the proportion is 17.8%. Red Clay and Brandywine are the districts with highest proportions.
