County Executive Paul Clark's office said in a
press statement that it has negotiated a new labor con- tract
with Local 1607 of the American Federation of State, County and
Municipal Employees, which represents 366 county government
clerks and technicians.
The two-year contract, which is retroactive to
Apr. 1, includes concessions equivalent to the workers taking a
2.5% pay cut, according to the statement issued June 29. That
was the standard Clark set to balance the fiscal 2012 budget
without resorting to layoffs.
The concessions include increased workers
contributions to their healthcare insurance plan and
"adjustments to overtime compensation." In return, there is a
no-layoffs provision which applies just to workers covered by
The statement said the agreement was ratified a
week ago by members of the local, but did not explain why,
considering its significance, the public was not promptly
informed of the agreement.
Negotiations with the four other unions are
continuing, the statement said.
